Street Hoops and Tony Hawk
Crazy how Rita first introduced me to a producer at Activision who wanted us to do a skateboarding game with Tony Hawk. While the project was placed eventuallly at another developer, Jose, I and Activision began talking about doing a street ball game with the And1 crew. And Street Hoops was born. This series of taljs turned into a $3.2 M contract. -
Back on the X-Files game...
I remember we originally went over to the Fox lot where Fox Interactive was, and a friend of ours ran the division- we'll call him Mike. Now, Mike had been at EA Sports, Activision and had recently come over to Fox to Exec Produce the Simpsons video game as well as others. My motivation was to go over there with Jose our CTO and another great game lead, and get a new contract for "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" - a show that our blackops.com stunt coordinator Chad Stahelski, was working on. "Buffy's already taken," Mike said as he pointed to his whiteboard. Jose and I looked at this whiteboard which had the next three years' slate of games to be released - basically inside information. Mike pointed at a hand-written line on the white board. "What about X-Files?" I haven't place it yet. "Sure," I said. "What's the Budget." "We've got about two point five for that one." "Oh, ok, I will send over a proposal when I get back to Santa Monica." This one lunch turned into $2.3M, a laughable game dev budget by today's standards - but back in the day it was a lot, and you could run a small team for 18 months off that kind of money.
